#21 Back to Cali

Wednesday 6/24/26

We had some family in town for their yearly trip back to CA so we took them out for some inshore fun. We were hoping the yellowtail bite would stay hot, but with all the wind we have had lately the water rolled and dropped from 71 degrees to 66 degrees. The weather today was nice and calm with a light breeze, but the fish were not cooperating very much. We launched the boat early and had our lines in the water by 6:30 am. Since the bait barges only have had anchovy we decided to skip the bait line and try to make our own. Fishing was very slow. We were hoping for some steady action but that was not the case. We spent about an hour trolling around, looking for a zone that would bite or show signs on the finder. With no bites on the troll we switched it up and focused our efforts on casting. We got lucky and picked off a white seabass pretty quickly once we started drifting. This was a fun fight for our family who lives on the east coast and does not go fishing. Vibes were high, and we were excited to see what else we could find. After a lot more casts Chris got a chunky calico bass that we released. We spent the day teaching them how to cast, and they got a lot of practice. We were out there for a morning half day and we worked hard for the one white seabass and a few calico bass that we caught and released. Fishing was really slow with not many signs of life, but it was a nice day spent on the water with family.
