#22 Double Double
Wednesday 7/8/26
Nothing like a nice morning sleeping in, followed up with a fun day of inshore fishing. We loaded up with anchovy at the bait barge and made our way to La Jolla around 9:30 am. Water temp was between 71-72 degrees and the weather was nice. We looked around for signs of fish and didn’t see much at first besides the resident mackerel spots of bait. Since we had a full tank of chovy we thought we would try our luck at some bottom fish. First drop and we found some fish that wanted to bite. We caught and released a bunch of species including sculpin, sand bass, calico bass, and we kept two nice sheephead. Fun action! With taco meat secured we decided to look for yellowtail. Pretty quickly we found the zone and picked 1 off. Next bite was unlucky, and after fighting the fish and almost getting it to color, I felt that awful feeling of the hook pulling. It re-snagged for a minute but popped off. Bummer. We fished for a little while longer and found another school of yellowtail and managed to get another nice one. It was a day for doubles I guess because we ended up keeping 2 sheephead and 2 yellowtail. We had a lot of fun catching and releasing a bunch of fish, including 1 nice sized mako shark, about 3 bonito, 10 big barracuda and probably a dozen calico bass.
