#9 Showtime

Saturday 4/18/26

We were busy getting ready for our first Day at The Docks event, but couldn’t resist the urge to go fish inshore Saturday before the set up window. We launched the boat early out of Dana Landing and decided to skip the bait line. When we got to La Jolla the water was around 65 degrees. We noticed it dropped a little in temperature, and I think this may be a reason why most of the surface action has been in the afternoon, as the fish seem to show more when the water has had all day to heat up from the sun. We were hoping to see some yellowtail activity before we had to set up for Day at The Docks, but we knew we would have to head in earlier than we normally would.

We found a few Calico bass on the troll around mid morning, and released all 3 of them. We saw some bird activity, but it looked like they were on the big bait that has been hanging around La Jolla lately. Under the birds we managed to find a short barracuda on the surface iron. The clock was ticking, but La Jolla wasn’t slowing down. More and more boats were making it out there, hoping to catch the afternoon bite. In our last hour of fishing on Saturday we caught a small Mako Shark on the troll. It was a moment of excitement when the line started ripping, but after it did one small run we knew it was not the yellowtail we were hoping for. Then, a large humpback whale came through and began waving at all of us. It was a nice sight to see, and it really put on a show. Now it was time for us to get ready for the show.

We have been attending Day at the Docks since we were kids. So many generations in our family have had the opportunity to live and fish here in Point Loma. We are happy to keep some family traditions alive, and it was special to have our own booth at this year’s event. Thank you to everyone who came by to see us and show support for our fishing brand. We are excited for the future, and we will continue to update you on our fishing trips, both inshore and offshore this season. Also, big thanks to those who read our blog and follow us online. We hope we provide some helpful information so you can make the most of your fishing trips. Remember, what you catch is beside the point!
