#6 Breezy Biters
Thursday 4/2/26
We launched out of shelter island to fish off of Point Loma and try our luck at some rockfish. We also heard the halibut bite was heating up and figured if it was too windy we could always try some spots in San Diego Bay. The run to some rock piles off Point Loma was windy and a bit rough today. Water temperature was around 65 degrees. We found a zone that looked good, and found a nice calico bass on a yoyo iron there. We fished along the bank and managed to catch a few red rockfish. At this point the wind was picking up, but we wanted to fish a little longer before heading into the bay. There was good sign of bait, bird activity and dolphins. We trolled some rapalas, but no luck. We tried another spot for rockfish and thats when we got another large Calico bass on live bait bouncing off the bottom. We ended the day fishing for Halibut inside of the bay. For about an hour our bait was getting smashed, but the fish were missing the hook. We decided to call it a day so we could head home and make some fish tacos from the rockfish fillets.
Rockfish is now open in US waters as of April 1st, so it’s time to get after it! Today was windy, and we were drifting really fast, which made it difficult to stay in one spot effectively. We are happy with our breezy biters and made a nice dinner out of the reds.
