#36 PARTY FOR HOO

Sunday 10/18/26

We had a fun weekend on the boat. Bayfest was this weekend, so we posted up with our friends on Saturday night and listened to some live music by Landon McNamara, SOJA, Common Kings and Kolohe Kai. We wanted to launch early, so we figured we would enjoy the music and stay the night on the water. In the morning we picked up some bait around 5:00 am and left Mission Bay.

We started our day trolling south along the 9 mile bank once we saw flyers and dolphin, and pretty quickly we hooked a Mako. We released it, reeled the lines in, and went looking for warmer water. We got into our target zone, but there were a lot of boats already trolling around. We don’t love to fish around the pack, so we went looking for our own pocket of warm water. We were south west of the cornado islands in our own zone with maybe 1 boat on the horizon and we found jumping dorado and a few small patties with micro fish on them. On each patty we threw wahoo bombs but no bites. It was approaching midday, so we decided to go back to the zone that all of the boats were trolling in to try our luck at a wahoo.

Once we were just a few miles west of North Island we tried a loop in the zone. Water was 74.5. We sped up a bit more than normal to start covering ground faster and zing! Our DTX was bit. We kept the boat in gear and started clearing lines while one of us started reeling. We had a large wahoo on the end of the line. We were stoked. We got the fish to the boat and quickly stuck a gaff into it. What a feeling. We stayed in the zone for a little longer but decided to call it a day. It was my brother’s birthday and now we had dinner secured. Nothing like bringing fresh local wahoo to the party. Our wahoo was 60# on the scale at home.

We hope you have the chance to get out there and get in on this special wahoo bite!
