#14 “One More Cast”
Friday 5/29/26
Schools out! When your boat is named “Summer Break” and it is the first official day of summer break that means you have to get out there. We knew the weather was a bit on the windy side, but sometimes comfort takes a backseat when you hear there are fish biting. We launched the boat at 2 pm and we were on our way to where we hoped we would have a chance at White Seabass. Water temperature was around 66 degrees and there were tons of birds and life in the area. We stopped to make bait, which proved to be a little tougher than we thought. After making bait we looked around for signs of fish on the surface or on the finder. We stopped on some marks and casted some hook up baits. Within a few casts one of us hooked up to a nice fish. It took a big run, did some head shakes, but after a few minutes the hook pulled. Must not have been set right, but it was a nice fight for a minute! This gave us some hope that we would have another chance. We kept fishing and released a few calico bass. Trolled around looking for yellowtail, but only connected with some barracuda. Despite windy conditions and choppy seas we at least had some action catching and releasing various fish. As the sun was starting to go down we stopped again to cast on some marks. I told myself “one more cast” and threw my bait out there hoping it would find something good. As soon as I started to retrieve it I felt it get slammed. The fish took a nice big run and had a few head shakes, so I knew it was a nice fish. It felt nice to gaff this seabass before the sea lion that was stalking us could get to it. We are pretty stoked that we got one after a nice one got away earlier in the afternoon. Sometimes sticking it out for one more cast is worth it!
